For nearly three decades, Steve Cooper has been proud to call himself a Cardinal. As the boys’ soccer coach, he values the importance of his role beyond the field.
“Sports are a roadway into the life of a player,” stated Coach Cooper. “The process of athletics should be to grow teenage boys into men. We encourage them to be more than just good guys but Godly boys’ who view sports as a blessing from God and are thankful for the talents they have been given.”
Coach Cooper and his family have been at SCCS since 1988. Both of his children attended SCCS from Kindergarten through 12th grade. During his son’s (Jason) senior year in 2000, Garrick Moss, the Athletic Director at the time, started the boys soccer program. Coach Cooper has been the coach since the first season.
“Each season brings new players and a chance to see how the Lord will lead as each player grows in Him and improves their soccer skills along the way,” continued Coach Cooper.
In addition to boys’ soccer, Coach Cooper also coached the first full season of the girls program in 2002. He has also coached junior high and elementary teams.
“Learning to work with others, whether they are more or less talented and accepting instruction, is one of the valuable life lessons that I have seen sports impact in a student’s life,” explained Coach Cooper. “We want to encourage these young people to grow beyond the sport and into life.”
Through the first two weeks of the 2017-18 season, the boys’ team has a 2-1 record, including a 2-0 mark in Heritage League play. Be sure to cheer on your Cardinals and attend some games this season. Click here to view the schedule!
