There are a lot of changes happening in the athletics department.
Chazz Anderson has accepted a Campus Pastor and Bible teaching position at Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village and will be departing SCCS. We all share a tremendous amount of love for Chazz and Chelsea and appreciate the significant contributions they have made to the Santa Clarita Baptist and SCCS communities over the past years. God has used both of them immensely in the lives of our students and families, and they will be greatly missed. Because the God we serve is sovereign, we anticipate that He will use Chazz in a separate place in the kingdom for His purposes. We look forward to seeing the impact he will make. Chelsea will also be leaving SCCS at the end of this school year as they are expecting the birth of their third child. She plans to stay home with their children.
This year, Mr. Josh Kristoff joined SCCS as the Athletic Director, math teacher, and coach. Josh has done an excellent job organizing the athletic department. He has also been attending school to finish his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), which he has put on hold to handle his job duties at SCCS. Next year, Josh will serve as the Assistant Athletic Director. His job duties will include teaching, coaching and athletics. This will also give him time to work on his doctorate.
We are eager to introduce Mark Bates as our new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. Many of you may have already met Mark. Last year, Coach Bates served as an Assistant Football Coach at SCCS, helping with the offensive line and special teams.
Over the past 34 years, Coach Bates has been coaching high school football at Village Christian, Oaks Christian, and L.A. Baptist.
Prior to joining SCCS, Coach Bates worked for three years at Village Christian School as Head Football Coach and 14 years at Oaks Christian School, where under his direction as an Offensive and Defensive Coordinator and Associate Head Coach, Oaks Christian grew into a nationally recognized program. Coach Bates also successfully directed the football program at L.A. Baptist from 1989 to 1999, having the most wins in school history and earning CIF Division X Coach of the Year honors.
He has served as the STEM Concentration Dean at Village Christian School and as an Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Algebra I, Geometry, AP Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II instructor.
Coach Bates has a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from USC and a Master of Education from Azusa Pacific University. He is an effective leader and communicator with over 30 years of experience in Christian education as a math teacher and football coach, mentoring students, coaches, and athletes to become more Christ-like.
“The opportunity I had to work with the team and players last year was great,” said Coach Bates. “I am excited to be a part of the SCCS family and am looking forward to what the Lord has for SCCS next year and into the future.”
The remainder of this school year will include a smooth hand-off of responsibilities with Chazz, Josh, and Mark.
Coach Bates will begin to work for SCCS part-time and will start full-time in June. We are truly excited to have Coach Bates’s experience in management and educational leadership at SCCS.
